In a hospital in Raleigh, NC, Matt Shields sits beside a patient’s bed. On his phone with the steady beeping of the machine tracking the pulse of Sela-Rica Lark, who lays unconscious in the bed, he barely notices when Sela’s fingers begin to twitch. Sela has several cuts and bruises along her face. She has just been through a brutal battle in Queen City. A small grunt from Sela makes Matt sit up straight and look to his girlfriend. Finally, her eyes shoot open in a gasp as they wildly scan the room a second before landing on Matt.
”Well, she wakes at last. Morning sleeping beauty.”
Sela looks away and after calming a bit looks around the room and realizes where she is. “Guess I lost.” Matt nods to her. “Ugh, pony girl will never let me live that one down.”
”You gave her one hell of a fucking fight. For what it’s worth, your body quit, not you.” He takes her hand with a smile when she rolls her eyes at him. “Hey, it happens to the best of us.”
“Indeed,” came a voice from the door. Matt and Sela both shoot their glances at the door. A large man, dark hair and eyes dressed mostly in black and heavily tatted with a Yin-Yang pendant hanging from his neck stands at the door, flanked by a tall, lithe woman, who has a similar style, but not tats, carrying a newborn boy in a carrier who is currently fast asleep.
Matt stands up aggressively. “Who the fuck are you?!”
Sela’s hand shoots up to him. “Wait, don’t.” Neither the man or woman has even flinched at Matt’s aggressive posture. “Hi cuz. Guess you saw what happened.”
Matt looks to Sela and back to the man and woman who enter the room. The woman takes a seat on the far wall of the room while the man walks up to Sela. “I did. And you’re an idiot.”
Matt is furious but Sela’s hand keeps him under control. “Had to be done.”
“No, it didn’t. You were stupid. Reckless. You went into this just hoping to draw blood and be done. You still haven’t learned what it takes to be truly vicious. It’s not just about keeping an attack. You have to be smart.”
”She is smart, asshole! Who the fuck is this babe?!”
Sela looks to Matt. “Babe, meet my cousin, Gabriel Ellis, former three time EFWO Hardcore champion. Over there his wife, Christine, former CWA World champion.”
Matt looks between the two. ”A few credentials and blood gives you the right to lecture her though?”
“It gives me the right to point her in the direction she needs to go.” Gabriel deadlocked Matt’s glare with an almost preternatural calm. The seven foot, well muscled giant dwarfed the normally impressive Matt, not that Matt was even caring at the moment. Matt nodded curtly before Gabriel finally turned back to Sela. “Sela, when you were in Christine’s studio, do you remember the one thing she tried to drill into your head?”
Sela sighed and rolled her eyes, a fact Christine noticed as she rocked the sleeping infant gently. “The worst battle fought is the one that you assume you’ve won before the bell sounds. Yea, I get it. I went into it not appreciating pony girl-”
”Sela!” came the stern voice from the 6’2 woman, tending her baby.
Sela scoffed. “I didn’t appreciate everything Azzy was willing to do and didn’t think to try to take it that one step further.”
“I know you don’t exactly have a care for rules normally,” Gabriel added. “But there is a reason you are in this position. You chose to ignore one of the base rules of any fight.”
”Never talk about fight club.” Matt smirks at his own words, even Sela had a chuckle, but Gabriel and Christine are not amused. Matt blinks a couple times. “What, never heard of a damn joke?”
”They don’t appreciate most humor.” Sela winces a little after the laugh causes her a little pain.
“You chose to ignore never to guess what either of you are capable of. You have to know every step of the way what each of you is willing to do.”
”Azzy has never shown this aggression. She’s a god-damn pony girl, a submissive in a BDSM club. She wouldn’t, shouldn’t, have a clue how to handle herself, take control for herself.”
”You think too much on her personal life, not giving a thought to what she has accomplished.” Christine chimes in again. “I’m disappointed in you Sela. You were one of the best I saw come through my center, but I told you unbridled aggression won’t serve you once you went to the real fights.”
“You may have learned a lot from Michael, but you need to remember our words as well.”
”Alright, enough. You said your piece, you two go sit the fuck down now.” Matt tried to keep a level head, but was starting to boil over. Gabriel brought himself to his full height and walked to stand as face-to-face with Matt as their respective sizes allowed.
Gabriel smirked. “I like him. At least it’s him and not some damn delusion who cares for you. And I see you found someone with a similar enough mindset as well.”
”I love Michael still, yea, but it wasn’t enough when he started to feel the ‘mission’ came first. Matt…” Sela takes Matt’s hand and pulls him to her. They kiss gently a moment, and Matt finally cracks a smile. “I know Matt puts me first. He knows me better than anyone else ever has. He knew so much about me just watching me in the ring, interact with others. He’s… I think he is perfect.”
“As long as he cares for you, cousin, that’s all Christine and I care about. If he treats you bad, though.”
”I won’t. You can fucking bet on that. Sela gets me as much as I do her. She understands everything about me and does everything for me that sometimes even I can’t do.”
”That’s a big admission babe.”
Matt turns to Sela. “It’s truth though. You have been here for me in some shitty times since all that shit in the summer. Whatever happens, babe, whatever you choose to do once you get out of here, you’re my Queen. Always will be.”
Gabriel moves away slowly as Matt and Sela hold each other a moment. Sela smiles. ”I might have to be smarter, but I can still be just as vicious.”
”You will be babe. You will.”
